Can You Microwave Uncrustables?

Uncrustables are sandwiches primarily made with peanut butter and also have jam in them. They have no crust hence the name, uncrustables. They are mass-produced by the United States-based company, J.M Smucker.

Over the years, people have tried to loosely categorize uncrustables as dumplings or even ravioli but the company has strongly maintained that its product is a special type of sandwich and should be regarded as such.

The uncrustable sandwich was developed in 1995 by David Geske and Len kretchman with the sole purpose of selling them to schools.

The company strongly advised against using a microwave to thaw uncrustables, they suggest you bring them to room temperature for about 30 to 60 minutes which is obviously time-consuming. So what do you do when you want your uncrustables so bad and you can’t wait for 30 to 60 minutes to allow it to thaw?

Can you actually microwave uncrustables? Yes, you can. Wrap the uncrustable sandwich in paper towel and microwave for 15-20 seconds. Flip the uncrustable over and microwave for another 15-20 seconds or until the bread is warm.

What to Know about Microwaving Uncrustables

The issue most people have with microwaving uncrustables is that in almost every case, the filling inside becomes so hot before the outside bread and this tends to deceive you on how hot they really are if you don’t limit how long you heat them up for.

The way microwaves work is that they are absorbed best by fat and water which is the peanut butter and jelly in this case. Both the peanut butter and jelly are thick masses and can hold heat in very well. But the bread on the other hand is dry and won’t become hot quickly.

So most times you have no idea that the inside is hot enough to cause burns while the outside is only warm to touch and you end up microwaving them for longer periods.

 How to Microwave Uncrustables

  1. Unwrap the frozen uncrustable sandwich ( Please never heat the sandwich in its original package)
  2. Wrap it in a neat paper towel and microwave for 15-20 seconds at medium/high heat. Turn the uncrustable over and microwave for an additional 15-20 seconds or until it gets hot. In all this process shouldn’t take more than a minute.
  3. Allow it to cool off for about 1-2 minutes before eating.

Alternative Methods for Heating Uncrustables

Considering the fact that most people are skeptical about using a microwave to thaw their uncrustables because the company strongly prohibits it. The company even has it written on the product’s package, coupled with the fact that the traditional means of thawing uncrustables is time-consuming and you might have even lost interest before it thaws. Here is our list for other means of thawing your uncrustable relatively fast without using your microwave or merely subjecting it to a room temperature for approximately 30 to 60 minutes:

  1. Although this might sound really funny, people have tried it and it works every time. After taking out the uncrustable from the refrigerator for some time, you can rub them between your palms and the frictional force generated will, in turn, produce heat. This will heat your uncrustable naturally as a result of a rise in temperature giving you a thawed food within a lesser time.
  2. You can also make use of the natural heat of the sun. Just like your car gets heated during the summer, you can keep your uncrustable at a position where the sun can heat it for a while. But to do this, you must ensure that the food is still kept in its packet.
  3. Using warm water to thaw uncrustables is also a valid method. However, just like the previous method, you must ensure that the food remains in its packet. After you’ve brought the uncrustable out of the fridge, immerse it in a bowl of warm water ( ensure it’s not too hot ), after a certain period the heat will thaw the food and you can eat them.
  4. Lastly, using heating pads works just as fine too. After you take the uncrustable out of the freezer, keep it in touch with the heating pad, slowly the heat generated will be transmitted and your thawing complete.

Here are some of the frequently asked questions on this topic:

How Long Can Uncrustables be Left Out of the Freezer and Still Taste Fresh?

For best quality, uncrustables are best eaten within 4-8 hours after thawing. However, ensure you don’t leave it out for more than 24 hours.

But if refrigerated you can keep it for two days or so.

What Happens When You Microwave Peanut Butter from Uncrustables?

For starters, it’s important to note that there’s almost no moisture in peanut butter but lots of oil and a microwave heat oil very effectively simply because there’s no latent heat involved. In a few minutes, the temperature will exceed the boiling point of water and keep rising.
