How to Freeze Chicken Noodle Soup

Now that we’ve established that freezing works well for chicken noodle soup without the noodles, here are some effective steps that you should follow for the best results:

Step 1: Cook Chicken Noodle Soup without the Noodles

If you’ll be cooking the chicken noodle soup from scratch, you should skip the noodles. Noodles will turn mushy after being kept in the freezer for some time. You should also avoid using any dairy product in the soup until it has been frozen, thawed, and is being reheated. Creamy soups will end up losing their consistency as the milk proteins separate from the soup’s liquids. The noodles can always be cooked fresh added in the soup later on.

Step 2: Allow Hot Chicken Noodle Soup to Cool

The chicken noodle soup will still be hot after you’ve just made it. It is important that you give the soup some time to cool. Putting hot chicken noodle soup directly in the freezer will create unwanted problems. The soup’s heat will increase the freezer’s temperature and cause other food items in the freezer to repeatedly thaw and refreeze.

As the chicken noodle soup is left out to cool, you must be mindful of the time. Chicken noodle soup cannot sit out at room temperature for more than 2 hours. After the soup has cooled, start packaging it for long-term preservation in the freezer.

Step 3: Transfer Soup into Freezer-Safe Container

Transfer the cooled chicken noodle soup into a freezer-safe container. If you can’t find a single container that’s large enough to hold all the soup, simply divide the soup into multiple smaller containers. Leave a little space for possible expansion at the top of the container.

The container of your choosing should have a lid that can be sealed tight. Once the container has been filled with chicken noodle soup, seal the lid properly so that cold air doesn’t spoil the soup.

Alternatively, you can freeze chicken noodle soup in a plastic freezer-safe bag. The plastic bag won’t take up as much space as the container – multiple freezer-safe bags may even be stacked on top of each other to save space.

Step 4: Label the Packaging and Keep in Secure Freezer Compartment

Use a marker to write the present date on the container or freezer-safe bag. The written date will help keep you reminded of how long you’ve frozen the chicken noodle soup for. In addition to the date, you can also write which ingredients you’d like to add once the frozen soup has been thawed and reheated.

Locate a clear space inside the freezer to keep your chicken noodle soup. Make sure you don’t place heavier food items on freezer-safe bags containing the soup.

How to Thaw and Reheat Frozen Chicken Noodle Soup

Thawing frozen soup is easy. Simply take the frozen chicken noodle soup out of the freezer and leave it inside the refrigerator overnight – the soup will have thawed by the next morning.

It is best to only thaw a portion of the frozen soup that you finish at once. If chicken noodle soup has been frozen and thawed, it is not advisable to refreeze it again.

After thawing your frozen chicken noodle soup, don’t just leave it to sit out at room temperature. Microwave the soup so that it can be hot and ready to serve. Set your microwave’s temperature to high and leave the soup to heat for about 20 seconds.

If your soup’s consistency is altered, you can simply stir it back together with a sturdy spoon as it reheats.
