Can You Freeze Jello Shots?

Jello shots are really easy to make and they’re also a lot of fun. You can make jello shots in your favorite jello flavors and also use the drinks you like best. All you basically need to make jello shots are shot glasses, flavored jello powder, some alcohol of your choice, and water. Because of how easy it is to make, you can conveniently prepare plenty jello shots for guests at a party. There’s also a lot of flexibility when it comes to deciding what goes into the shots. If you’re a vodka person, feel free to prepare your jello shots with vodka – other alcohols like rum, tequila, gin, whiskey, and brandy can also be used.

Assuming you’ve made a lot more jello shots than you planned to, what will you do with the leftovers? First off, I wouldn’t advise you to forcefully eat the rest in an attempt to avoid wastage – this will only lead to stomach pains and other unwanted side effects like nausea. So, if we don’t want to waste our excess jello shots, what do we do?

At this point, you may start wondering; can you freeze jello shots? Yes, you can freeze jello shots. However, freezing jello shots isn’t as straightforward as freezing water or juice. Jello shots have a gelatinous form that makes them freeze in a unique manner. When frozen, the original texture of jello shots is altered and the flavor is also diluted.

The presence of alcohol in jello shots is also a key factor that affects how well it freezes. There’s a certain temperature range that alcohol can only freeze in. If it is at temperatures outside that range, the alcohol won’t freeze. Ideally, this temperature that alcohol can freeze in is found between -143.7⁰F and -97.6⁰F.

Freezing Jello Shots

Remember that jello shots can’t freeze normally like other fluids because of its jelly texture. However, it can still be kept frozen for a couple of weeks without losing its qualities. Majority of people would tell you not to even freeze jello shots in the first place, but then what would you do with your leftover jello shots?

If you’ll be freezing a couple of jello shots, you need to grab some resealable freezer-safe bags in the small sizes. Pour the jello shots into the bags, but don’t fill the bags to the brim. Instead allow some room for possible expansion within the bag. Once the jello shots have been packed and sealed tightly, write the current date on the bags with a marker so that you’d always know how long the jello has been in storage.

If you want to get the best quality out of your frozen jello shots, it is best to consume them a few weeks after freezing. The gelatinous constituent of jello shots hinders them from getting frozen into solid form. Because of that, prolonged freezing of jello shots will result in it getting soggy.  Olla express a presion

How to Defrost Frozen Jello Shots

Defrosting jello shots is not a complex process. After the few recommended weeks of freezing, you can take the jello shots out of the freezer for consumption. At this point, the jello shots still won’t have turned solid – they simply can’t.

Remove the freezer-safe bags containing the jello bags and put them in the refrigerator. Refrigeration is a great way to thaw or defrost several food items. However, it is a process that takes many hours. If you don’t want to feel that waiting time, it is best to defrost in the fridge overnight. This way, you get to wake up to a totally thawed batch of jello shots.

Once you’ve taken the jello shots out of the freezer, don’t leave them to defrost at room temperature – doing that will facilitate a change in the gelatinous nature of the jello and you’ll end up with a watery batch of jello shots.

How to Make Jello Shots

Since making jello shots is a simple and straightforward process, I’d like to share a few simple steps on how you can make a fun batch of jello shots for you and your friends. To make the shots you’ll need some alcohol (anyone of your choice), 3 ounces of Jell-O brand gelatin, and a cup of boiling water.

  • Allow the alcohol of choice to get cold in the freezer. While that is happening, mix hot water and gelatin together in a bowl. Once the gelatin is fully dissolved in the hot water, mix it together with the cold alcohol.
  • Next, grab your desired shot glasses, or small plastic cups, and fill them up with your jello shot mixture.
  • The quantity of ingredients mentioned above is enough for about 2 dozen people. Feel free to make more batches if you’ll be having many guests.

Here are some of the common questions people ask about jello shots and freezing it:

Do Jello Shots Really Get You Drunk?

Well, you shouldn’t actually be able to get drunk from taking jello shots. The recipes used in making jello shots do not accommodate so much alcohol in the mix. You may not even taste the alcohol in the shots because of the gelatinous form the jello shots take. The sweet taste of the jello also covers the taste of alcohol in the mix.

How Long Can You Keep Jello Shots Frozen For?

Ideally, jello shots can last on their own for up to 4 days if kept in the refrigerator. Typically, it is recommended to freeze jello shots because of their gelatinous nature. However, you may find yourself in a situation where excess jello shots were made.

Jello shots can’t freeze into solid form. However, you may still be able to preserve their quality for a few weeks by keeping them in a freezer.

What Happens When You Put Too Much Alcohol in Jello Shots?

Excess alcohol in your jello shot will prevent it from setting. There’s appropriate water to alcohol ratio that should be used in jello shots. When using a cup of juice and a pack of gelatin, you’re expected to use half a cup of alcohol.
